Admiral sits in the Rural Municipality of Wise Creek No. 77, about 65 kilometres south of Swift Current and 1.6 kilometres south of Highway 13, the Red Coat Trail. It lies on the Great Western Railway, roughly 30 kilometres from both Shaunavon to the west and Ponteix to the east.
The community was incorporated as a village in 1914. Its name comes from the Canadian Pacific Railway's practice of choosing names from a list, and Admiral, a naval rank, fits with other places along the Weyburn-Lethbridge line such as Yeoman, Khedive, Viceroy and Consul.
Admiral gave up its village status when it dissolved on August 17, 2006, and it is now a special service area within the rural municipality. Intercity bus service from the Saskatchewan Transportation Company ended in 2017. Today it has a post office and a Roman Catholic church, and the surrounding area's economy rests mainly on crop farming and livestock operations.
